The Native American story of the Stone Mother: Long ago, the mother of all mothers had four children. She loved each of her children dearly, and they were happy. As they grew older, her children began fighting with one another. They fought, and fought, and fought. Until one day she had enough of the fighting and sent two of them to the North, and two to the South.
The woman grieved for her children. She became so enveloped in sadness that she began to cry. She sat at the foot of a mountain facing her children and cried day after day. Her bitter tears filled her basket and fell so fast they began to form a lake. Eventually, her heart became so cold with grief that she turned to stone. She sits in front of a lake now known as Pyramid Lake in Nevada, which is one of the few naturally forming saltwater lakes in the United States.

I love visiting Pyramid Lake — particularly the Stone Mother — whenever I visit my cousins who live on the local Indian reserve (Paiute) in Nevada.
